OK, so this one's a little cheesy, but I picked it up along with a couple of other education books, and I liked it enough to post a little on it.
501 Tips for Teachers by Rober D. Ramsey, Ed. D., follows the format of his other two 501 Tip books -- Child's Self-Esteem and Child's Success in School. He hits on classroom teaching, relations with students, discipline, working with parents and colleagues and personal development and motivation.
A very quick read, and while a lot of it is standard stuff, there were some nice reminders and some ideas that newer teachers might want to pay attention to.
My favorite, and one that I have learned over the years, is No. 312: "Make friends with ehe school secretary and the building custodians. They can be your most important allies." I think that's the No. 1 piece of advice I give to new teachers when they ask.
Other specifics I liked (to give you a flavor of the book):
No. 140: "Remember, your classroom may be the only happy home some kids ever have."
No. 158: "Support extra-curricular activities."
And on one page, there were three in a row that I really liked:
No. 94: "Expect excellence. Accept best effort."
No. 95: "Don't just give students something to do. Give them something to think abut."
No. 96: "Don't rule out memorization. It's still a valuable teaching tool. What's worth remembering is worth memorizing."
Nice gift book for newer teachers.
