Just catching up is all . . .
Jul. 18th, 2004 10:56 amNotes from the life . . . .
Just a few things as I watch the Red Sox sink lower and lower in the standings, wonder why I care so much more than usual about the Tour de France and so little about the British Open.
Health stuff . . .
Yes, I am recovering just fine from the retinal surgery, thanks. Won't really know until Thursday when I go to see the doctor again. Two sets of eye drops four times a day, keep my head down, sleep with a piece of plastic over it. Bah! But the eye looks a lot better already, and I am discerning shapes.
Have spent a lot of time in the house, on the computer, puttering around, etc. Drove nicolat to Manchester for her flight to Washington, D.C. She got there fine.
Did a little touring of New Hampshire on the way back, then a little book-storing.
I will be around the house all week if anyone wants to do anything.
Super Scrabble
Has anyone else played the newly released Super Scrabble.?
Winning Moves Games, in Beverly, Mass., has a license from the makers of Scrabble, and they have doubled the board and the number of tiles and have inserted quadruple word and letter scores. They have also doubled (I think) the number of double and triple bonuses for words and letters.
I need to play it a few more times, maybe with four people. Played with my 17-year-old daughter, and we found that the game was much more wide open with all the additional bonus tiles. Ours scores wound up in the 500s. We played a second time Friday with a gaming friend who doesn't play Scrabble but was fairly intuitive. That game seemed to last a lot longer with the third person, and since others were waiting to play something else, we gave up with about three or four rounds to go.
I will keep trying it. I want to get together with my friends whom I have played with before. If anyone wants to get together and play, let me know.
Keeping track . . .
From the engagement announcement of one of my former students . . . .
Miss Wesche, a 1999 graduate of Ledyard High School and a 2002 graduate of the University of Rhode Island, is a PhD candidate in pathobiology at Brown University. She is presently in surgical research at Providence's Rhode Island Hospital.
In another article, I discover that Zara Northover, who I had at a summer leadership camp three years ado, has made the Jamaican national team for a big Under-23 competition. She's a shut-putter.
