A 2004 graduate of Ledyard High School was wounded Sunday in Iraq as he and other soldiers rushed to the aid of victims of a car bomb and were attacked themselves.
Army Pfc. Adam Collins of the 65th Military Police Co. of the 16th MP Brigade, based at Fort Bragg, N.C., suffered shrapnel wounds to his left arm and serious burns on his face and hands, his father said.
He is the son of Mark Collins of Groton and Donna Mansfield of Ledyard. He joined the Army right after graduating from high school.
"We were all a wreck at first, but after talking to him we calmed down a little," Mark Collins said, adding that his son was evacuated to a military hospital in Baghdad and then to Germany and is to be transferred soon to Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.
