Monday ramblings . . . .
Nov. 20th, 2006 08:07 pm1. Apparently it's not going to be a White Thanksgiving, but we are definitely into raw November weather. It's 34 degrees right now in Waltham.
2. Some of my friends were talking about wanting SOCKS for Christmas.
3. OK, I am a ship-name geek. World War II submarines were named after fish and acquatic animals. Missile subs were named after protitoic heroes and then states, Fast-attack subs were named after cities. Aircraft carriers are now named after presidents. Other classes are named after battles, etc. The class of ship is named after the first ship in the class -- US Los Angeles fast-attack submarrines, Ohio-class missile submarines. My point? I love science fiction authors and alternate-history authors who follow a naming scheme. I just picked up "Weapons of Choice" by John Birmingham. It's set in 2021. One of the ships is the USS Kandahar, a Baghdad-class littoral assault ship, and the USS Hillary Clinton, a George Bush-class supercarrier. (PS: littoral means the area between the low-water and high-water marks). (Also, one of the real-life Los Angeles-class subs was named after a Texas city, but then the name was changed to "The City of Corpus Christi").
4. Squee. New CD from Loreena McKinnitt tomorrow, as well as a CD/DVD from Great Big Sea. And I have a credit from Borders for having their buyers' card. Squee!
