Apr. 6th, 2007 12:18 pm1. One of the things I love about teaching is getting days off, like Good Friday. Yay! I do have a lot of grading to do this weekend, but this morning was one of those precious moments. I came to consciousness and said to myself, "I hope it's not after 5 a.m." (The alarm is set at 5:30 a.m.). I looked at the clock, and it *was* after 5 a.m., then -- from a corner of my brain -- came the thought, "And it's Good Friday, so there's no school." Ahhh, sweetness. Of course, I *was* woken up just after 9 a.m. by a phone call from
evilnicola, who needed to be picked up at Riverside, but it was all good because she took me to breakfast at "In A Pickle" in Waltham.
2. The Herald nailed the Red Sox headline: "Dice-K-K-K-K-K-K-K-K-K-K." I apologize to my friend who do note speak baseball, but The new -- very expensive -- pitcher for the Red Sox had a great first game and struck out 10 batters in seven innings.
3. From an article about an upsurge in Medieval re-creation in Belgium . . .
Although the dates are disputed, many medieval scholars say the Middle Ages began in 476, with the fall of the Roman emperor Romulus Augustus, and ended in 1453, with the taking of Constantinople by the Turkish sultan Mahomet II.
Such is the devotion to the period that, in recent years, juvenile delinquents in Flanders have been freed and allowed to atone for their misdeeds by making a 2,000-mile pilgrimage on foot to Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain, carrying backpacks, and accompanied by a guard.
4. Speaking of nights off, I had a really exciting time last night. I watched an episode of "St. Elsewhere," part of "Faith Rewarded," and several four episodes of "Hill Street Blues." I got some stuff done on the computer, and -- wait for it -- I rearranged my sock drawer. Yep, big, hot life I have.
Today's movie: "Staff Sgt. Dignam has a style of his own. I am afraid we have to get used to it."
