Sunday evening: Catching up
Nov. 18th, 2007 07:05 pm
1. I had an absolutely delightful time yesterday at Bjorn's Ceilidh in Concordia of the Snows. Just a kick-butt local event. Incredible food (kudos to wldrose) , great people. The highlight for me was spending about two hours in the kitchen, copping chicking and listening to Duke Gavin tell stories about the days when rocks were soft. I got to catch up with Msitress Brede, toom and the barony did a wonderful auction. I had leftovers from the feast for dinner tonight. Pictures here!
2.It's going to be a busy week, as three-day weeks go. The students up at Warrensburg HS are working on the community mapping project that is a big part of our grant. They will be out there tomorrow, then we need to work on arranging things for next Monday as well.
3. I love stories -- and headlines -- like this from the New York Times:
If You Give a Mouse a $25,000 Frrrozen Haute Chocolate
Serendipity 3, a popular restaurant on East 60th Street, was in the news last week for a publicity stunt boasting about world's most expensive
dessert: a $25,000 Frrrozen Haute Chocolate. It was back in the headlines today, after the city shut it down for failing a second health inspection.
The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, which closed the restaurant on Wednesday, said:
Both inspections revealed rodent and fly infestation and conditions conducive to pest infestation, including stagnant water in the basement. In Thursday night's inspection, the inspector observed a live mouse, mouse droppings in multiple areas of the restaurant, fruit flies, house flies and more than 100 live cockroaches. The inspection report for the closure is not yet available.
The closing of the restaurant was reported by The Associated Press (via The Times), The Daily News (which called the closing "a stunning reversal of fortune") and The New York Post (which described the frustration of tourist who found the restaurant shuttered.)
4. Oh, yes! I saw a moose while I was driving to visit a school Friday. Very, very cool. Pictures eventually. I also saw a flock of 25 or more wild turkeys on the same drive. Several deer tried to walk into the road when I was driving alethea_eastrid home Friday night, and we saw two bounding across a field Saturday morning on the way the event (we were, they weren't). Sheep and alpaca abound. There are Highland cattle up the road.
5. I cannot get the fancy firstgiving widget to work, so I will try this one:
