1. I have a visceral need for this vacation. I don't whine often, but other than my boss granting my Pennsic leave, life's not been as good as I would like up here in the North County. It's a rare day that I whine about it, but I am waiting for the turn-around that I am sure is going to come. I didn't get a second interview in Johnstown, and Hudson Falls didn't even give me a sniff.
I did drop off a resume today at Bolton Central School, which I think would be a nice fit.
I am working like crazy at work, but today I realized tomorrow was a deadline. The report's done, but my boss (the one who gave me the break) really likes to send things out in advance, and I caught her at the end of a long day.
One more day of work, come home and pack like a madman. (Well, we're in pretty good shape, but the night before you leave is always insane.)
2. OK. There are good things, too. It's gorgeous up here, and I have become something of a fresh-food nut. I love my wife, I have other dear friends up here, my kids are greater my friends are terrific, and my duke is the prince. The cats have not destroyed anything lately. All I need to do to make my wife happy is bring home three ears of fresh corn.
3. I am approaching Pennsic differently. I am going to enjoy myself as much as I can, in many ways. Last year was no fun. I am going to re-connect with old friends and make new ones. I am going to be sane in my approach to "Beer Quest" and being the Major Domo. I will do everything I can to make sure the royalty has a great war, but am gonna have fun doing it. I will sing in Calontir. I will hoist a toast to the new prince ad princess of Ansteorra. I will take lots and lots of pictures, then take more. I will spend time with my kids and their significant others, I will carry water to anyone I damned well please. I will attend court. I will attend vigils ("Be careful. People are gonna take your advice now."). I am going to see a friend squired and other friends get awards. I will annoy the heralds. I will go to bardic circles. I will flirt with women. I will shop. I will eat. I will stay hydrated. I may even use sunscreen.
OK, I feel better now.
4. Yes, I have read Orson Scott Card's commentary on gay marriage.
I do so want to use the word "screed, but I will be good.
I would counter his point by asking how much longer schools would have been segregated (or would they still be), if not for the courage of the court in Brown et. al. v. School Board of Topeka, Kansas.
The irony? I found out yesterday that wife's cousin and his long-time partner, who live in California, will be getting married in October.
Ender's Game? Still one of the greatest science fiction books ever written. Who knew?
5. There's a local marketing firm called Trampoline. Click the link for a great story on their blog. Yes, they have a blog. Cutting edge, you know.
6. I do feel lonely, because my e-mail and LJ Friends' list have gotten quiet and will be getting quieter.
I will add to the quiet, because at this point I do not plan on posting from Pennsic.
Bring on Friday morning!
