From the New York Times:

ST. PAUL — The 17-year-old daughter of Gov. Sarah Palin, John McCain’s running mate, is five months pregnant, Senator McCain’s campaign advisers announced today.

The daughter, Bristol, plans to marry the father, the campaign said.

In a statement first posted by Reuters, Mrs. Palin said: “Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows that she has our unconditional love and support.”

The announcement was intended to counter rumors by liberal bloggers that Mrs. Palin had claimed to have given birth to her fifth child in April when, according to the rumors, the child was her daughter’s.

Groups that oppose abortion rights had been thrilled with Mr. McCain’s selection of Mrs. Palin, the governor of Alaska, as his running mate, partly because of her opposition to abortion. It is not clear how social conservatives will respond to the latest news.

The campaign intends to cast this as the kind of situation that ordinary American families face.

The McCain campaign says it was aware of her daughter’s pregnancy before it named her as the running mate on Friday.

My head hurts.

Does anyone know of a culture in which needing to have a cat whisker pulled out of the bottom of your foot shortly before a job interview equates to good luck?

1. Welcome to [livejournal.com profile] emmy_lynn. That's two new folks via Hunters Moon.

2. Speaking of Hunters Moon, [livejournal.com profile] xgreenjudasx gifted [livejournal.com profile] alethea_eastrid and me with a bottle of 10-year-old Aberlour, largely because of its chocolaty notes. It's a Highland. We are partaking, even as we speak. I do have a question for the Aunty Baska. What was the BPAL you were had. (Yeah, Scotch and perfume party with Dew-Mead).

3. I am curious how non-journalists will answer this question. You are designed the Tuesday front page. Assume you have no earth-shattering local stories and you are not on the Gulf Coast or in Alaska.

How do you design your front page? Is Gustav more or less important than the announcement of Bristol Palin's pregnancy?

Where do you put the stories? What pictures do you use?

4. Interview was interesting. Can't really get a feel. It would be a bit of a gamble that could pay off in a big way. There's a big meeting Wednesday, and depending on how that goes, it could be a much bigger deal. I was the first interview. There are others coming, and he wants to make a decision by the end of the week.

5. We are re-watching Babylon 5. We are on the third episode and Londo just called Vir a "moon-faced assasin of joy." I like that image.

6. I wish I could have been a fly on the wall at the Publick House last night.

Nate: "I do not know what to have."

Niki: "Nate, they will mix bacon into your macaroni and cheese."

Nate: *Beams*

7. In a random list of Lord of the Ring quotes, two of the best are back-to-back:

Witch King: "You fool. No man can kill me. Die now."
Eowyn: "I am no man."

Gimli: "Certainty of death, small chance of success... well, what're we waiting for? "
