1. It will not snow any more this season. I bought a new snow shovel today.
2. Had a really bad night sleeping. Apnea issues. The CPAP ain't working right (which reminds me of the country song. "The whiskey isn't working, any more"). I have an appointment later this month.
So I took a sick day. I felt overtired and depressed and I would have done a crappy job at work.
3. That meant I slept more. I am having really weird dreams lately.
* You know how you dream that you are in a dream? I had a dream that I was dreaming that I was having a dream and dreaming in it. Yeah.
* Another one: I was in some D&D fantasy, and I went to call someone, and I realized there were no phones and I needed a magic spell. (This took place, for my family, in the empty lot -- where there is now a house -- at the intersection of Beach Street and Riverdale Gardens in Westerly).
* Oh, and I made the mistake of mentioning to someone I wasn't having the naked teaching/late for class dreams. I was in my former school (which didn't look like my old school, but rather looked like the school that always shows up in my dreams, an amalgam -- and there's a house in my dreams that's like that too. I think I was there last night). First day of school, couldn't find the classes, and then realized I was in a classroom with only my dress shirt on. I hate that dream.
4. The New York Times continues to impress me with obituaries, even for a scumbucket like W.D. Zantzinger.
5. I was very happy to see Jim Rice get into the Baseball Hall of Fame. I have never thought about going to an induction before, but I might consider this one, even though it's on the fist Sunday of Pennsic!.
6. Another "Salem Stroll" today, even though I did have to move the car.
Across the street to the doctor's office, to the pharmacy, to the library, to the post office, to the hardware store (see No.1) to th ebank, to the pharmacy and home.
The folks at the doctor's office informed me the local paper had a front-page Polar Plunge photo last month and I was clearly visible in the group. I could not find it on line.
7. I am reading a book called, "Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game That Made A Nation," by John Carlin, which is about the incredible power of Souther Africa's 1995 Rugby World Cup victory over favored New Zealand.
It's where today's quote comes from:
"Sport has the power to unite people in a way little else can. Sport can create hope where there was once only despair. It breaks down racial barriers. It laughs in the face of discrimination. Sport speaks to people in a language they can understand . It is probably the most effective means of communication in the modern world."
