1. Today, the clouds parted, we were bathed in golden sunlight and the Liamverse welcomed a pair that could be a straight flush. Welcome,
faheud and
ingusmoen.
2. You know how proud I am of my former students.
One of them, Katie Xiao, came to the U.S. from China. She entered high school as a gawky 12-year-old.
She left as a newspaper editor, National Honor Society student, area volleyball player of the year. and one of the most-liked kids in her class.
She is doing a panel tomorrow, and here's how she describes her job:
To give you a little more background about what it is that I do, I am a research paralegal for the U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division’s Foreign Commerce Section. I handle translation of news articles and legal provisions and other Chinese-related issues that often come up.
She went back to China with a school program in order to better learn Chinese. Amazing young lady.
3. Gourmet poutine?
4. It's a good thing I have a Canadian feed on my Google News page or I would miss stories like this, about a border crossing being shut down.
5. I am still having a lot of trouble processing the murder of Dr. George Tiller. I didn't read as much on it today as I have the last two days, but I am learning a lot of things I did not know about him and about the abortion process. I always feel funny commenting on abortion, because I am a guy.
6. I am listening to Ken Burns' "World War II" book on CD on the way to and from work. The sheer numbers of those killed in single battles just mystifies me.
On a single day -- Dec. 7, 1941 -- we lost 2,500 soldiers, sailors and Marines, and on June 6, 1944, we lost 1,465.
In five weeks at the Battle of the Bulge, we lost 19,267. That's 550 a day. I cannot wrap my head around that.
7. I love
rufinia! Especially for her links, like 100 Best Music Lines in 200 Seconds.
"Price is wrong, bitch."
"Get away from her, you bitch."
"You're gonna need a bigger boat."
