I am breaking this response out, because I have had a number of people ask me if we will be doing the Royal Travel Fund cookie sale at future events.

I have specifically been asked about Bhakail Yule, 12th Night and Birka.

Honestly, I do not see it as working at Birka for a variety of reasons, so at this point I will not pursue that. Please write me privately if you question that.

To do the sale at Bhakail and 12th Night will require two things:

1. I need to write to the autocrat and clear it. I will do that tonight. I *know* there is a mertic butt ton of stuff going on at both events, and Bhakail is in 10 days.

2. If we get permission, I need a coordinator and two to three helpers at each site. If you are interested in that let me know.

I am sure there will be requests for others. I will keep you posted.

In service,

Liam

Please note: This is the first in a series of posts I am re-posting here after accidentally posting them on [livejournal.com profile] themajordomo.

I apologize to those who see them twice.

I made the mistake a couple of weeks ago of commenting that it seemed there were fewer memes on LiveJournal these days.

Yeah, OK.

Well, there have not been a plethora of "Which Eastern Pelican are you?" posts, but there have been some old favorites popping up, including the "Say Resistance is futile and I will give you five questions to answer in your LJ" meme.

I got two sets so far.

I am fascinated.

They are both from peers, one from the East and one from Calontir. They are obviously long-time friends of mine, and what they decided to ask me was rather, well, similar.

These are from [livejournal.com profile] marysdress:

1) Which Red Sox players would you trade before next season?

I am too attached to these guys to deliberately get rid of any of them. I would say that perhaps the single most important one to keep is Jason Varitek. You keep your captain at all costs. Also, sign Johnny Damon. Let him finish where he belongs.

2) If you were king (of the East), what would be your first act?

After I asked my queen for permission . . .

I would ask every bard in the kingdom to write a song in praise of the East or in praise of someone from the East and ask them to allow them all to be published.

Then, we would sing.

3) Pick one speech over the other - "we happy few" or "wet kisses that last three days".

Wet kisses, sadly, because Crash really meant it. Henry, I have come to realize, was not speaking literally.

4) Why is beer good?

Gee, look. A beer question.

It's tasty! (mostly) And more than that there are a wide varieties of extremely tasty beer. You don't get bored, and different brewers interpret it differently.

It's a social lubricant. (Yes, than can be bad, but it can also be good.) It's a commonality. Hey, let's have a beer! Let's talk about it over a beer.

As I mentioned in [livejournal.com profile] evilnicola's word meme answer about history, I think it's a common denominator. Most folks have had a beer. They understand.

There's a great future for new beer drinkers. I love the look on folks' faces when I turn them on to something new. (Angus The Bruce lit up like a Christmas tree when I gave him something he was sure her wouldn't like.

5) What is one thing you haven't done and want to do in the next five years?

There are so many, many things I wish I could do. I want to go to Estrella and Gulf Wars (and Rowany). I want to go to a big-time college football game in the Midwest. I want to visit many places and do many things.

Most of all, I want to write the damned novel(s).

And these are from [livejournal.com profile] snailstichr:

1. What one piece of advice would you give a new Crown?

There are several cliches that pop to mind: "You rule because they believe," and "Apologize more loudly than you fart" are important, as is the idea that the person you are giving that AoA to may never be in court again. Make is fricking special.

But the most important advice I would give is "Sing with your people." [I wrote this before I answered No. 2 above]

2. What has baseball taught you about life?

To quote, as [livejournal.com profile] marysdress did, "Bull Durham," "Sometimes you win. Sometimes you lose. Sometimes, it rains."

In truth, it has taught me to think like that. There will be lows, and they will suck. There will be highs, and they will be glorious. In between you just gotta gut it out and bat .300.

3. What would you name the perfect beer (and, if you choose, what picture for the label)?

Well, Freeport Brewing has "Ex Wife Bitter Blonde" taken already. That's a good one.

(It's a pun on the beer style bitter and *not* a personal reference in any way shape or form.)

Well, it would be a dark, thick stout, probably with coffee in it.

Bulldog Bill's Yirgacheffe Stout: "Chew on this."

The cover would have either this guy:

Or this fella:

The label would look like a coffee label, ala Green Mountain/

4. What real world attraction (not a family obligation like a wedding) would be worth missing a friend's coronation?

(Did you know that Nataliia and I had to miss Tibor's Pelican because we had to take state teacher tests?)

Honestly, the closer the friend, the fewer things. This one's family, but when Leonete becomes queen, I cannot think of anything that would keep me away.

I would skip even family events for certain friends, and there are a couple of people I would fly across the country to see elevated to royalty. There's at least one knighthood I would fly to the West Coast to see, no matter what. I hope that one is at Pennsic.

5. What art or science would you like to practice if money/talent/storage space/time were not a factor?

I would like to make stained glass in the period manner.

I love memes, but I do not always follow through.

Before I get to the two sets of  "Resistance is futile" questions, I need to repond to [livejournal.com profile] evilnicola's "Five Words."

[livejournal.com profile] evilnicola was doing the five-word meme, and I asked her for five words. There are few people in the world who know me better than she does.

History: We are our history. We cannot move forward unless we know what went on before. History’s also about cultural anthropology. We need to have common references so we know what it means to be “Chamberlain at Gettsyburg,” or why we must “Never forget Auschwitz,” or remind ourselves of Loving v. Virginia when we talk about same-sex marriage. There’s a Star Trek episode that sums it up. The quote is: "Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra." There’s also the James Loewen reference about the dead that we all knew and the dead that know in who is alive ever knew.

Hope: That’s a big one. You always have to have hope – for yourself and for others. There will be days you cannot find the hope, but you need to find it the next day or the day after that. I have the fervent hope that there is good in everyone.

Daughter: The daughter, she is fragile. The daughter, she is unbreakable. She is the beginning, the middle and the end. One day, you are holding her in your cupped hands, and the next you are talking to her like you’d talk to any other teacher. The daughter is hope exemplifies.

Home: Home is where you can scratch yourself and fart, no matter what anyone says. (“If a man cannot [insert activity] in his own house . . . “ Home is, first, the place you live and sleep, But it is also very much the place your friends are. Pennsic is “home” in many ways. So is a classroom and so is a sideline.

Stupidity: “And some people don’t even know they’re stupid.” Or, “Stupidity is in the eye of the beholder.” I draw a distinction because people who do the stupid because they just don’t get and the others who do the stupid deliberately. You know how to cut down on the stupidity? Life needs a “Send Later” button.

This completes the reposts I accidentally sent to [livejournal.com profile] themajordomo.

1. From [livejournal.com profile] dulcinbradbury:

Crossed Genres is looking for people to spread the word to get preorders for their anthology and general financial support. Since they were the
first people to publish me, I've got a real soft spot for them.

They're also lovely people to work with. At any rate, my post about it is here: http://dulcinbradbury.dreamwidth.org/1055220.html

Kay's post is here:

2. From [livejournal.com profile] fiannaharpar:

Tony Norman of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has an excellent analysis of the Bible verse/anti-President Obama bumper sticker

3. From [livejournal.com profile] ayeshadream:

This came across the Wyewood list, and I've sent it to the Steps:

Dairyland Greyhound Racetrack in Kenosha, Wisconsin will be closing on December 31, 2009. 900 Greyhounds need to be adopted or they will be
euthanized. Please help get the word out; there are only 6 weeks to get this task done. Contact Joanne Kehoe Operations Director P:

4. From [livejournal.com profile] mare_in_flames:

Her uncle is an attorney in the Exxon Valdez case, and this is what he has to say about what Sarah Palin had to say about her role in the
settlement:

"That is the most cockamamie bullshit," said [Uncle Dave] of Anchorage, lead plaintiff attorney in the private litigants' civil
case against Exxon and its successor, Exxon Mobil Corp. "She didn't have a damn thing to do with it, and she didn't know what it was
about."

These are from [livejournal.com profile] bernina2000de.

1. If the was any one thing you could change about the East Kingdom, what would it be?

We'd have a lot more songs, and we would sing a lot more.

2. If there was any one thing you could change about Calontir, what would it be?

Someone will follow Ferd's plan and there will be fencing that fits.

3. How did you find the SCA?

We stumbled into it. Nataliia wanted to get out one night a week and wound up taking a fencing class (over yoga). Some of the guys in the class went to SCA practices after that, and it all blossomed from there.

4. What was your favourite job ever?

I loved sports writing. Well, much of the time. I loved weekends when I would cover a game Friday night, then a game Saturday morning and another Saturday afternoon, then work in the office and (sometimes) have Sunday off. But, it's a better job for a single guy or women rather than someone's who is married.

5. If you could have any meal what would you eat?

I would be back in my grandmother's kitchen, and she would be setting Portagee Stew Beef on the table.

Question: Who asked me a set of questions that included "If you could have people from history over for dinner, who would they be?"
