1. It was 4 degrees this morning in the North Country. At least  it’s clear. It was 55, rainy and foggey earlier in the week.

2. I just am not that excited about J.D. Salinger’s legacy. Yeah, I read “Catcher in the Rye,” but I just don’t see all the fuss kicked up about the book. The main thing I got out of it was that it’s OK to write a novel in which the protagonist is a whiny dope.

Howard Zinn? There’s a guy we’ll miss. He made so much more of an impact, but a lot of folks won’t even recognize his name.

3. Why is it that in the course of an otherwise reasonable discussion on children in the SCA, someone always has to use the word “spawn” instead of “children?”

Maybe it’s me, but I get a negative connotation from “spawn.”

Of course, there’s another one that I consider far worse that we haven’t seen in a while.

4. Another one for the list of jobs I will not be applying for:

Organ Procurement Coordinator
Responsibilities: The Organ Procurement Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the entire organ donation process including donor family approach, evaluation of organ function, placement of organs with transplant centers, and organ recovery. Travel in motor vehicles and small aircraft as well as extensive on-call are required. Knowledge of personal computers with Microsoft applications is a plus.

Requirements: Previous 3 years of experience in a direct critical care, emergent care, or surgical care setting a must. Prior organ procurement experience, critical care nursing experience, or surgical experience strongly preferred. A variety of medical training backgrounds will be considered for this unique role. Bachelor’s degree preferred.

5. As far as I am concerned guy says on the witness stand, “I killed him,” I think you stop the trial right there and the judge gives a directed verdict.

I know that’s not the law, but if the jury in the assassination of Dr. Geoorge Tiller is even allowed to consider a manslaughter verdict, that’s just wrong. This is clearly premeditated murder.

6. This morning’s ear worm: Well, at least I do not post what my cat had for breakfast.

It actually started blank. I tried to keep it that way. Soon, I had Willie Nelson crooning “Still Water Runs the Deepest,” followed by “Requiem For  Dying Song” from Flogging Molly.

7. OK, this is it! Going to pick up [livejournal.com profile] alethea_eastrid, grab a bite to eat at home and head for Birka. We will see you there. Please stop and say hello.
