1. I am not the only person with a new job. My friend Rebecca is working at ESPN.
I have met her once, but we talk a lot on the Internet.
She's not like me at all. She's young, pretty and a Yankee fan.
But I am not gonna hold that against her.
Through sheer grit -- and her excellent blog "The Purist Bleeds Pinstripes" -- she got the gig at ESPN.
Today, she got her first byline.
Oh, to be young and talented!
2. I am sure there are professions that have production cycles like the newspaper business. Certain schools do.
So basically, I only work on the weekend if there's a big event going on in Whitehall, and basically I go take pictures, get notes and go home.
Monday is 9-12 hours of reporting and Tuesday is 9-12 hours of finishing the reporting, then paginating the paper. Both those days start at 8:30 a.m. or 9 a.m.
Wednesday means the Granville officer (where I go on Tuesdays) at 8:30 a.m. to finish the paper, help with another and set things up for the following week.
Thursday and Friday usually bring basic office days and reporting in Whitehall, making sure I have photos and copy for the following week. I can trim time Wednesday, Thursday and Friday if I need to. Usually, though there are night events, too.
I am really enjoying it.
It's going to take some getting used to.
3. Stuff Liam sends people:
Tonight I found myself typing a moose pie recipe for an Ealdormean baroness of some fame and beauty.
We have "Cooking Alaska," and she needed the recipe because, well, pies (and puppets) are the themes at the Skraeling Althing
Quick and dirty version
Pound of moose or caribou chuck.
1/2 cup whole-what flour, Bacon drippings
Salt and pepper.
Hot water.
An onion, cut in eighths
Eight small potatoes (3 large) cubed)
Four large carrots, quartered
Cup of peas or more.
Biscuit dough
Start with the meat dredged in flour and the bacon drippings in a Dutch oven
Cook meat, add veggies, except peas, cook 20-30 minutes
Thicken the gravy and add the peas
If you did not use a dutch oven, transfer to baking dish.
Top stew with cut biscuits Bake 10 minutes at 400, then back at 350 until biscuits are brown.
You could just use that recipe as the filling for your pie.
4. I love being flirted with. Just sayin'.
5. I refuse to read any stories about the word "nigger" being edited out of Mark Twain's work. It will make me crazy.
6. Last week, I put out a call to double the number of people who "like" the Whitehall Times on facebook. We were at 50. We hit 100 today!
7. And today's winner of the Internet is:
