Classes I am planning on teaching . . .
May. 1st, 2011 01:36 pmAs many of you know, I was a high school teacher for 16 years, and I have been in the SCA just a little longer than that.
Since I am not involved in royal reigns right now, I have more time for teaching.
I have classes planned at four upcoming events. Only the Arts & Arrows classes are set, but I will let you know when the others are finalized.
When I have handouts done, I will post them on the web.
I am very interested in input, commentary and suggestions.
Thanks,
Liam
Arts & Arrows
Saturday, May 14
Shire of Glenn Linn, Queensbury, NY
East Kingdom
10 a.m.: "How to Have Fun In The SCA:" This is a class for anyone in the SCA, whether new or experience. A list of really fun ways to pass the time in the SCA and ideas on how to approach it as fun.
11 a.m. : "Welcome to the SCA:" A basic newcomers' class even for people at their first event.. The real basics about the SCA. I am doing this one second to give the new folks a chance to get acclimated.
Break for lunch
Informal discussion over lunch: "Student-Teacher Relationships in the SCA."
1 p.m.: "If Someone's Wearing a coronet with six pearls, what do I call her?" The answer is "Your Excellency." This is a quick overview of awards, titles and forms of address in the SCA. Useful for new folks and as a refresher.
2 p.m.: "SCA Groups and Geography:" What's a stronghold? Where is Smoking Rocks?" "Why is it called "Smoking Rocks?" "You mean there's SCA in Australia?" A quick overview of kingdoms, principalities, baronies and the like and a look at SCA geography in the East and in the Know World.
3 p.m.: "Peerages 101:" What's a peerage? How do people get to be peers?
(Yes, it’s opposite Crown)

1. Liam’s Favorite SCA Sings: I am banned from singing, but I love SCA songs. I have a lot of CDs and a lot of favorite artists, and I want to share them with you.
2. SCA 101: Everyone’s favorite beginner’s class. Experience folks welcome.
3. Court: In front of and behind the thrones: (Tentative). What happens in court? How should I act while watching or while in front of the Crowns? Why do the heralds talk so much?

Pennsic 40
August 7-11
Cooper’s Lake Campground, Barony Marche Debatable Lands,
Glorious, Glorious Aethelmearc
I just realized today (May 1) is the deadline to get listed in the Pennsic handbook.
I have proposed the following four classes, which will be taught during the second week, August 7-11.
Classes for EKU in April
1. “Master Liam’s Favorite SCA Songs:” Master Liam St. Liam, who is not allowed to sing, will present recordings some of his favorite SCA songs, including performers such as Heather Dale, Master Hector of the Black Height, Sir Bryce de Byram, and Master John Inchingham.
2. “Court: In The audience and behind the thrones:” Court can be intimidating for new Scadians, and even folks who have been around have questions. What are courts all about? How do they come together? How do I act in court? What if I get called up? Why does the herald talk so much? Master Liam, like his Pelican before him, is a court junkie. He also spent a reign behind the thrones when his wife, Countess Alethea was on the throne and can explain how courts are set up and how to best enjoy them.
3. “Having Fun In The SCA: The venerable Master Ernst von Kitzingen says, of the SCA: "If you ain't havin' fun, you ain't doing it right." How can we keep that element of wonder and fun in the SCA? Feel free to bring ideas. This would be a great time for people to share ideas with others. How do you keep things fresh? How do you avoid burnout.
4. “Teaching in the SCA:” This classes focuses on using standard teaching techniques, including a detailed lesson plan, to help you improve your teaching on SCA topics. Applicable for anyone who teaches, whether they teach class-room topics or hands-on skills.
