1.Welcome to [livejournal.com profile] jeep_squire and [livejournal.com profile] peragrine. More SCA madness!

2. The apocalypse is upon us. My mother has e-mail. Yep, 73 years old and new to the Internet. I need to tell her that those nice Nigerian men really won't sent send her money, and she did not win the lottery, nor does she really have an account at the NorthSouthWest Municipal Saving Assoiciation. If you would like to send my mom a "Welcome to the Internet" e-mail, please e-mail me, and I will give you her address. Please do not offer her beachfront property in Atenveldt.

3. When I was in college, I was the editor of the school newspaper (The Good 5-Cent Cigar). One of the popular TV shows was a Mary Tyler Moore Show spinoff called, "Lou Grant," a drama about a newspaper in LA. Since my fraternity brothers were inventive, my ZBT nickname (at least one of them) was "Lou Grant." At one point, one of my fraternity brothers introduced Mom to his mother as, "This is Lou's mother, Mrs. Grant."

Flash forward to the Christmas open house at [livejournal.com profile] alethea_eastrid's library. There is a delightful elderly woman whom I met during the book club discussion of "World War Z." She introduced me to her husband as "Bill Eastriding," (where Eastriding is equivalent to Alethea's real last name). Yeah, kind of amusing,

 4. Basically, a meeting sucked up my entire day. We hosted it, so I had to help set up and break down. There were good things, and there was drama. There was also excellent food. Did I mentioned I hate meetings?

5. If you get the Glens Falls newspaper, please save the honor roll section from today. There are two articles about my grant intiative program in there, basically as filler. I wrote them.

6. I think this is excellent news:

From scifi.com (via [livejournal.com profile] brian_berlin):

Jackson To Produce The Hobbit

The Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson has settled his differences with New Line Cinema and will executive-produce a two-part adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, the studio announced.

New Line and MGM signed a deal to co-finance and co-distribute The Hobbit and a sequel to the film. New Line will handle distribution in North America, and MGM will distribute internationally, the two studios said. It's unclear whether Jackson will helm the films.

New Line added that it and Jackson have settled all litigation over Jackson's profit participation in the $3 billion-grossing Rings trilogy, without giving details. The settlement apparently brings to an end the acrimonious split between Jackson and New Line.

Jackson and Fran Walsh will executive-produce the films, to be shot simultaneously, and New Line will manage their production.

Preproduction will begin soon, and principal photography is tentatively set for 2009. The release of the first film is slated for 2010 and the sequel in 2011.

Jackson, MGM chairman and chief executive Harry Sloan and New Line co-chairman and co-chief executives Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne jointly made the announcement on Dec. 18.
