1. Welcome to ~psci260. Go check the user info. You might be interested in getting in on the discussions.

2. There's Portagee Stew Beef on the stove! And it's got bay leaves!

3. God Help the Queen!

I mean, "You can help the queen.

From [livejournal.com profile] farmhouse_ghost:

HRM Brenwen is in a spot at the moment and really needs everyone's help.  She is desperately low on favors.  Typically, the Pennsic Queen needs about 1200 favors to cover the War.  HRM Brenwen has about 200.

If everyone makes a few favors by EK War Camp, I'm sure we can come up with the 1000 or so she needs.  I have about 20 ready, with another 30 to go (I promised 50).  I will be at Glenn Linn -- if you need fabric or fabric packets, I will make some up to bring with me.  Each packet will have 5 favors, with the pattern drawn on them.  Please let me know if you're interested in the 'kits', so I have enough with me at the event.

The favor design is here, along with all the specs.  http://www.eastkingdom.org/trm/downloads/Favor.pdf
They can be embroidered, painted, appliqued, beaded, you name it.

Please help and spread the word!

Thanks,
Vienna.

4. And from [personal profile] cbpotts, via [livejournal.com profile] shadesong:

"My hubby Tim is in the volunteer fire department for our town (Ellenburg Center) Now, we're a BROKE town and the fire department doesn't have a lot of resources -- like basic fire fighting gear and EMS supplies and stuff. The ambulance crew is the first response for medical emergencies up here -- and we're all farmers and whatnot, life's dangerous and our medical unit is understaffed and all volunteer. Nobody gets paid anything. The Ellenburg Center Fire Department is selling cookbooks to raise money for gear: they still don't have enough funding to buy turn out gear for all the guys. Turn out gear is what you wear when you're going into the burning building to save people: it protects you from the fire. It's such a small department, we simply don't have -- and there's not a lot of tax base to draw on here, quite frankly. So if you want to help out a good cause, buy a cookbook. (You'll discover, in this hard back, spiral bound cookbook, recipes for appetizers, soups, salads, veggies, main dishes, desserts and more -- all the best of North Country cooking, delivered fireman style!) Email me at cbpotts (at gmail (dot) com and we'll get you hooked up -- they cost $12.95, and postage is $2 regular mail, $4.60 express."

5. Why does the word ameliorate even exist?

6. True or false: The U.S. Interstate Highway system runs through the state capitals of every one of the 48 contiguous state.

 7. It's almost Polar Plunge Season!

Well, not really. But Special Olympics New York has put out tentative dates for its big fund-raising event. My dive with be Dec. 13 in Lake George. I am thinking about going for it all this year -- trying to be the biggest fund-raiser at the local event. That information will, of course, come later.

My New York readers who are interested oughta check behind the cut )

There are quite a number of new works by some of my old favorites either out, coming out soon, or coming out later.

1. First of all, an excerpt from "Victory of Eagles" by [livejournal.com profile] naominovik is up here!

C'mon. Dragons. Napoleonic War. What more do you need?

2. You want apocalyptic vampire fiction instead?

Then you need [livejournal.com profile] eeknight and "Fall With Honor"

3. Music? You want music?

4. We're two weeks from the release of the newest Great Big Sea CD -- Fortune's Favour.

5. More books, you ask?

There's a new Harry Dresden   book coming out in October. There's another in April 2009.

There's also a novelette focusing on his brother Thomas from the amazing folks at Subterranean Press.

6. Did I mention I cannot wait for Hellboy II: The Golden Army? Yes, I think I did. Evil elves!!!

7. John Scalzi will have the latest in his Old Man's War series, "Zoe's Tale" out in August.

There may be more, but that's seven.

The cover  images were being wonky, so no pictures.

3. It would have been cool to have a member of the British Royal Family competing in the Olympics. This is too bad.
