Moments in a life: Sept. 11, 1983

A life can slip by quickly, almost 50 years gone now.

But there are moments I can summon with crystal-clarity.

The nurse hands me a baby -- our baby -- and the only thing I can think is: "Do not drop her. If you drop her, it's gonna be very, very bad."

I didn't drop her, and now, all of a sudden, she's a poised, smart young woman of 25 years.

I remember so many details of that night. The Patriots playing. The men's finals of the U.S. Open. The obstetrician trying so hard to keep a young couple relaxed. Including by focusing the husband on the television.

My absolute dread as I realized my wife was still under, and the joy of her waking and smiling ever so slowly as she held her daughter for the first time.

Happy birthday, Theresa Marie, I love you.
