Pennsic By The Numbers -- II
Aug. 23rd, 2009 09:42 amI know I am not the only one who is still trying to wrap up Pennsic members.
So we will pick up where I left off:
21. I got to go to a wonderful wedding in Horde Camp on the middle Saturday, because
bronxbaroness had asked me to take pictures of it as part of her donation to my Special Olympics Polar Plunge last year. There were a lot of happy people. Kudos to
liadan_m for bringing a sandwich back to me.
22. WE saw very little construction on I-90, except for a little between the New York line and Erie. There were two or three decent-sized sites on I-79 from Erie to Coopers Lake. But we passed at night anyway.
23. The trip home included a now "traditional" stop at Piggy Pat's barbecue just south of Utica. Great, great stuff.
24. Getting to meet
soldiergrrl,
cenliamgordon and
dekarch was as cool as I thought it would be.
soldiergirl getting sick was not good. But I did get to spend time with Liam.
25. At one point, I introduced myself to some folks I have never met, maybe at the fencing field, and as I left, someone said, "He seems like a nice guy." I found that pretty cool.
26. Sometime in the next month, we should all find a few people who volunteered at Pennsic and "made it go." I do some volunteering, running tournaments, carrying water, but people like
diablu and
wldrose and so many others do it all the time.
27. On the same point, that sort of thing happens in camp, too.
nisaa has, for years, put on a Turkish Dessert Party on Monday nights. It's been a tough year, so her friends pulled together and did all the work. It rocked. Nice synergy down by the lake, one camp doing dinner and the other doing dessert.
28. I did not get around the lake this year -- again. My legs are not what they used to be. I think I only got down the hill to the near side of the lake twice. Didn't go to any parties down there.
29. The trip for us, is 475 miles and basically 8.5 driving if we do not stop for a full meal.
30. Our friends are fabulous.
jtdiii, [Unknown site tag]
liadan_m and other had our tent up when we got there at 2:30 a.m. Not an easy tent, either.
31. As I said, we got in very early in the morning -- on the middle Saturday -- and Gate was like a well-oiled machine.
32. I am glad I am not an archer at Pennsic. I would have to be a really motivated archer to get out to the range. I did hear that it was nice.
33. What a great, great thing to see
wingblaze back at work!!!!
34. Oh, and reveling in getting to spend some time with
lumineaux.
33. I *liked* the planes and helicopters. Oh my.
34. I have been to Vlad's maybe a couple of times in the 17 or so years I have gone to Pennsic. Apparently, the place still packs 'em in.
35. Seraphina, from Bjornsburg in Ansteorra, is a saint, and she's training new saints. I have explained before that our camp and Ansteorra Royal share a common kitchen area. Our meal plan is not very expensive as these things go, and Seraphina has breakfast out every morning and dinner at night. For the last couple of years, she's had more people helping her, which is good. The food rocks, and having coffee waiting in the morning helps me get up easier.
36. I need to re-evaluate my ideas on classes, largely because I could get up at 8:55 a.m., grab coffee and still be early for a 9 a.m. class across the street. We are right at the A&S tents. When I was up in Sharc, A&S seemed "so far away." I want to teach, too! This year, we were unsure on attendance, so I did not sign up to teach anything. I still feel badly about the year I got sick and had to cancel my classes.
37. We hadn't taken part in a full set-up or breakdown of camp much before, so we planned our Saturday motel reservation so we would only have to drive to Erie or so. The rain didn't help, and we spent much of the day packing and waiting and packing, nor did the fact we could not get the big truck until 6 p.m., but a little after 8 p.m., we were sitting in an almost empty camp, eating pizza. It was beautiful. We appreciate you, [Unknown site tag]
jtdiii ;)
38. The filled raisin cookies at one of the shops in the Food Court kept me going, so did the chocolate bread pudding and Fruity Cobblers. (I ws getting protein at breakfast and dinner).
39. When we got home, there was an absolute pile of mail.
40. But the cats were hiding. They had hid from the woman who was feeding them, but the food kept disappearing, so we figured it was good. One of them came out, rather warily, then I got home, and the other took her sweet time.
