1. Did the grocery shopping yesterday morning, then a load of dishes and there's Portagee Stew Beef on the stove. I am catching up on my Pennsic and other LJ posts and waiting for the bathroom to clean itself. [Update: Did some bills and cleaned the living room, too. The stew was fabulous!]

2. If you are going to to the Washington County Fair in Easton, NY, this week, let me know. I am going to be doing some stories and taking some pictures down there a couple of days during the run.

3. If you are anywhere near this area, block out Sept. 17 and 18 for Irish Fest 2000 at the Saratoga County Fairgrounds in Ballston Spa. Start with Great Big Sea, Gaelic Song, Enter The Haggis, Hair of the Dog, Seven Nations, Young Dubliners and the Barra Macneils and go from there.

4. Besides the trip to Suicide Six to see Great Big Sea Saturday, I also did a couple of newspaper articles over the weekend. Saturday's was about a local church's outreach to students, and Sunday's was a rainy bicycle tour to promote local land stewardship. They are here and here.

5. Oh, NPR. This is not the news I need in the morning.

The price of coffee beans hit a  12-year high today. I thought there might be some kind of reclusive-hedge-fund-guy-corners-coffee-market story, like we saw with cocoa earlier this summer.

But the main driver of coffee prices right now is more prosaic: Colombia has had a few years of weak coffee harvests because of too much rain, which has reduced the global supply. And coffee drinkers keep buying coffee, even as prices rise (in other words, demand is inelastic).

The higher price of beans — up about 40 percent since March— means higher prices for the coffee you buy by the pound. But it probably won't affect the fancy coffee you buy by the cup.

6. Well look at this! I have nothing on the schedule for this weekend. That's not so true for most of the rest of the Fall, with everything from the opening of high school football season to a huge car festival and a balloon festival, Irish Fest (see above), and, in November, [livejournal.com profile] theresat's wedding and the Polar Plunge. All of a sudden, it will be Thanksgiving!

Oh, I am sure I will pick up some news stories this weekend. And the Washington County Fair is on, too.
