Some I knew he would pick this up.
1. What's the worst thing that's ever happened to you?
My father dying when I was 15. We expected it. We knew he was not a physically healthy man, but dammit, I never got to know him.
2. Every kid swears "when I'm a parent, I'll never do that to my kids." What was it for you -- and have you inflicted it on one of your kids?
Not allowing me to do something "just because." While I know at least one of my daughters thinks we did this to her today, it is not something I do on purpose.
3. I know you have to lovely and beloved daughters. Do you ever wish you had a son?
I asked God for healthy children. That's what I got. No regrets. It would have been different certainly, but not necessarily better.
4. What are you afraid of?
Thinking I am doing really well and then finding out I am failing . . . Having good things happen to me because that means bad things will happen to even things out.
5. What single book on history would you recommend to one of your students and why?
People History of the United States by Howard Zinn. I don't necessarily buy the whole socialist/populist history thing, but it opens a lot of doors that textbooks do not.
