I read and post a lot at www.teachers.net (as Bill In Upstate NY).

Someone posted a snarky comment about Letterman, and so anonymous bozo (I hate the fact they allow anonymous posting), said, "Well, don't you think that what Obama's School Safety Czar did was a lot worse?"

I have been trying to find an objective story to explain to folks who don't know about Kevin Jennings what is going on.

He is gay and was the founder of the Gay Lesbian Straight Educators' network.

He has been named the "Safe School Czar." Some very loud Conservatives have been reading his autobiography and other writing and hammering him on things. (Some in Congress hate the "czar" idea, because these folks do not have to be approved by Congress).

You are free to hunt GoogleNews, but most of the stuff is Fox or further Conservation, peppered with the occasional Gay news report.

I am trying to go with the flow, but sometimes, there are people on the Intenet who are so wrong, I just need to reply, and in the case of this posting I did. (after removing the words Lesbian and sex from the posting, because the board won't allow those (it's a spam-bot issue, they say):

If you have been on this board any length of time, you know I am passionate about a number of things.

 

Establishing a safety environment for Gay, Lesbian and bi-sexual teenagers is one of them.

 

I was lucky enough to have a terrific National Honor Society president who came to me and asked if I would help start a Gay Straight Alliance at our school. Both my daughters were in it, and my younger daughter and I were in one at the other school I taught at.

 

When Kevin was teaching at Concord Academy, he started the nation's first GSA. (Massachusetts, earky 1990s, I think).

 

He went on to form the Gay Lesbian Straight Educators' Network (GLSEN), which is now nation-wide and an umbrella organizaion of sorts for GSAs. I highly recommend their web site.

 

I have met Kevin and read his books. He is passionate about inclusion and safety of all students.

 

Was his advice to that student appropriate? It's not what I would have said, but he was playing a supportive role that no one had ever played for him.

 

I think it was dumb, but it was also a very long time ago.

 

He's the guy you want in this position right now.

 

Oh, by the way, Columbus Day will be the 11th anniversary of Matthew Shepard's death.

I am looking for someone who is seriously Obsessive Compulsive.

Is there anyone here who saves handouts from classes and took my Teaching in the SCA class?

I am looking for the lesson plan and the filled-out lesson plan.

I have to reconstruct them, because they are not on my computer.
