I am rather upset with various aspects of the SCA Board of Directors' latest attempt to ask about membership issues and "pay-for-play."

On a variety of levels.

Then there's the whole stupid stereotyping issue that was bouncing around the SCA LJ.

I am also upset that the garage that inspected the truck did some unexpected work on the brake lines (because they were leaking), and now I basically have no breaks.

I am also getting really depressed with these stories about fathers killing their kids (or men killing their girlfriends' babies).

I started a screaming rant earlier, but abandoned it.

I learned a long time ago that I should not let SCA issues bug me, but I hate it when peopel don't get it.

I also need to know worry about people's individual comments, but stereotyping really bothers me.

The truck, well, I already called them and told them [livejournal.com profile] alethea_eastrid would bring it to them in the morning so they could fix it. I was polite when I left the message.

There's not much I can do about evil in the world.

OK, I think I feel a little better.

Now that I think more about it, I'm beginning to like pay-to-play. A lot of people balk at $35/year, and changing the $3 from a "Non-Member Surcharge" to a "Day Membership" that counted towards your $35 would do a lot to help ease newbies into the program. It would also help oldbies who have children or otherwise can only go to one or two events per year, and don't like the idea of paying NMS for a club they've been a part of for a decade or more but also dislike that they're not getting their $35worth. Really, it's a win-win situation.

I disagree, but that's OK.

My issues are more with the board itself, but I think forcing people to be members goes against the SCA as I know it.

I also know this is a kingdom-specific thing.

I would like to know why the board wants to do this before we do it.

Most certainly. I'm a member more as a symbolic gesture than anything else, but I haven't had the chance to figure out the breakdown of what my $35 is getting me.

Mostly I was just pejoratively finding a way to make "pay-for-play" a cheaper prospect than the current state.
